The princess cut is most often bought as a center stone, but a surprising share of our wholesale princess volume goes into channel-set bands. These are the slim, straight stacking rings that run a row of square stones across the top half or full circle of the finger. They photograph clean, they price clean, and they reorder predictably. They are also unforgiving of sloppy stone matching, which is where a lot of production headaches come from.
Why the princess works in a channel
A channel setting holds stones between two walls of metal, with no prongs on top. For a round stone that means slightly less face-up light because the walls cover the girdle. For a princess cut, the channel actually works in the stone's favor. The square girdle sits flat against the metal wall, which gives the stone a stable seat. The corners are protected by the channel walls, which is the single biggest durability concern with princess stones. Read our corner protection notes for the details; in a channel, the walls do half that job for you.
The result is a band that looks sleek from the top and wears as comfortably as a plain wedding ring. It is the everyday stacking band most customers buy after a princess solitaire, which is why it reorders so reliably.
Stone size and band width
Channel-set princess bands run at 1.5mm to 2.5mm stones. The most reorderable size is 2mm. A 2mm princess on a 2.8mm wide band gives a clean, even row that reads as a continuous bright line. Going below 1.5mm makes the stones look tiny and the band look empty. Going above 2.5mm makes the band heavy and uncomfortable for stacking.
Stock half-eternity and full-eternity versions. Half-eternity, stones across the top half of the finger, is the best seller because it can be sized in the future without removing stones. Full eternity looks more luxurious but cannot be resized once made, which limits the customer to stock sizes. Our bulk side stones eternity guide covers the production side of both.

Matching tolerance
This is where channel production lives or dies. Every princess in the row must be the same millimeter, the same depth, and the same color. Because the channel walls hold the girdle at a fixed height, a stone that is even 0.1mm deeper than its neighbor sits lower in the channel and reads as a dark square between two bright ones.
Buy the stones in a matched parcel, not as singles from open stock. Ask the supplier to sort the parcel by depth as well as by size. A reputable wholesaler will pull stones that all measure within 0.05mm on the side and 0.10mm in depth. If you mix stones from different parcels, expect to cull 10 to 15% of them on the bench. That cull rate eats the margin on the entire job.
Color and clarity
DEF color, VVS clarity is the standard for princess channel work. The square pavilion of a princess cut shows color more readily than a round, because the light enters and exits through flat planes rather than through a curved facet. A near-colorless princess in a channel reads warm next to a white gold band. The customer will compare it to a diamond stacking band she has seen in a store, and the difference will be visible.
VVS is the minimum, not the luxury. At 2mm, an inclusion that is invisible under a loupe reads as a dark dot when the stone is set in a bright polished channel. The premium for VVS over VS at this size is small, and the rejection rate difference is large. Buy VVS.
Metal and finishing
14k white gold and platinum are the two metals that sell. Sterling silver moves in the entry tier but tarnishes faster on a band that is worn daily. Yellow gold is a niche but consistent, particularly for customers stacking with a yellow gold engagement ring.
Finish the channel edges smooth. Rough channel walls catch on sweaters and hair, which is the number-one warranty complaint on this style. The bench should hand-polish the inside edges of the channel after setting, not just the outside of the band.
Margin and reorder
The channel princess band is a high-velocity, lower-margin SKU. The stone cost is small because the stones are melee, the setting labor is predictable, and the retail ticket is accessible. The margin is recovered in volume. Expect to reorder the same 2mm half-eternity band every quarter once it sells. For jewelers just starting the princess category, our small jeweler MOQ starter line will help you size the first order without overcommitting. It is the kind of piece customers buy in two or three metal tones over time, which compounds the reorder value.
