A bench jeweler once stocked only solitaire settings. In one year she set 14 solitaires, 3 halos, 2 three-stones, and zero vintage. The vintage customers walked across town to a competitor. Ring settings are the frame around the stone, and if your shelf has only one frame style, you are leaving the sale on the table. For wholesale buyers who assemble finished rings, the setting inventory is as important as the stone inventory.
This guide ranks the moissanite ring setting styles by turnover, tells you which metals to stock, and explains how to pair setting styles with the shapes that sell.
The setting styles that move
Across wholesale assembly shops, setting turnover ranks like this:
- Classic solitaire (4 or 6 prong) — 40-50% of ring settings. Default engagement. Never out of stock.
- Halo (pavé center ring) — 15-20%. Makes a 6.5 mm stone look like 8 mm. Strong margin.
- Three-stone (past-present-future) — 10-15%. Anniversary and proposal.
- Shared-prong pave band — 10-12%. Stackable and wedding band companion.
- Vintage milgrain and filigree — 5-8%. Slower but loyal niche.
- Bezel and tension — 3-5%. Modern, smaller audience.
- Eternity bands — 5-8%. Steady; order by stone size in matched sets.
The IGI reference on diamond grading is useful when you explain settings to customers who compare to diamond; the setting itself is a separate product. We cover the stone side in round stone sizes.
Which metal to stock
White gold (10K or 14K) is 60-70% of setting sales, rose gold 20-25%, yellow gold 10-15%. Sterling silver settings are the entry bracket for fashion rings under $200 retail. The sterling silver standard is 92.5% silver; for engagement settings, 10K white gold is the sweet spot because it is harder than 14K and resists prong wear over years of daily wear.
If you are selling into the EU market, note that the REACH nickel directive limits nickel release from items that contact skin. White gold settings should be rhodium-plated to stay compliant. Our export packing notes are in export packaging.
Pair shapes to settings
Round brilliant pairs with every setting. Oval pairs best with solitaire and east-west bezel. Cushion pairs with vintage and halo. Princess pairs with 4-prong solitaire and modern pavé. Emerald pairs with bezel and step-band. Stock the setting shapes that match the stones you already hold; a mismatch means a stone sits in inventory waiting for a frame.
Ring sizes to hold on hand
Finished settings move fastest in US sizes 5, 6, 7, and 8. These four sizes cover roughly 70% of ring sales. Stock two each of the top three styles in sizes 6 and 7, one each in 5 and 8, and order all other sizes to cut on a 7-day lead time. Half sizes (5.5, 6.5, 7.5) are almost always cut to order; holding them ties up shelf space for a sale that happens once a quarter. Sizing beads can be added at the bench to take a 7 down to a 6.5, so erratic sizing goes down, not up.

Build a starter setting kit
For a new assembly shop, start with 12 settings: four solitaire 6.5 mm white gold, two halo 6.5 mm, two three-stone 6.5 mm, two pave bands in 925, one vintage 6x6 cushion, one bezel 8x6 oval. That covers the top six styles without overcommitting. Our broader stock plan is in boutique build-stock plan and the bench-side setup tips in girdle thickness when setting.
How many settings should I stock vs order to cut?
Stock the top three styles (solitaire, halo, three-stone) in white gold at 6.5 mm. Order the rest to cut on a 7-day lead time. Settings are cheaper to hold than stones, but still tie up cash.
Is 10K or 14K better for moissanite settings?
10K white gold is harder and holds prongs longer on everyday-wear rings. 14K has a richer gold color for yellow and rose. Most bridal buyers default to 14K for the look; the bench should carry both.
Can I set moissanite myself?
Yes, with standard diamond-setting tools. Moissanite is 9.25 on the Mohs scale (slightly below diamond at 10) and cuts cleanly. Take care not to chip the girdle, especially on princess corners.
Do settings come with certificates?
No, the certificate travels with the stone, not the setting. Always keep the GRA report with the stone until it is set, and hand the report to the retail customer at sale.
