Oval Moissanite in Pendants and Rings: Metal and Setting Combos That Sell

The first oval article covered the cut itself: proportions, bow-tie, face-up size. This one is about what happens after the buyer places the stone in a setting. Oval moissanite sells as a combination, and the combination drives the retail price more than the stone does. The right ring mounting on an 8x10 oval doubles the perceived value without changing the center cost.

The ring combinations that move

Three setups account for most oval ring orders we supply.

  • East-west solitaire: the oval set horizontally across the finger. Reads modern and a little unexpected; popular with customers who want something bridal but not the default vertical oval. Sizes 7x9 and 8x10 work best.
  • Vertical solitaire with a thin pavé band: the mainstream oval engagement look. The 8x10 size is the sweet spot; it reads as a two-carat stone at a one-carat price.
  • Oval with tapered baguette sides: the stone flanked by two tapered baguettes. This is the red-carpet setup and the one that photographs best. It also protects the oval's shoulders with the side stones, which reduces prong pressure on the girdle.

The pendant combinations

Oval pendants are a separate product line and move on a different calendar. The solitaire pendant on a 40 to 45cm chain is the default, in 7x9 or 8x10. A halo pendant, where a thin oval halo surrounds the center, reads larger and is the gift piece that sells in Q4. Bezel-set oval pendants are the everyday-wear option; the bezel protects the girdle and the pendant survives being slept in.

Metal pairs by product

The oval's long axis responds differently to each metal, and the choice changes the price point you can charge.

  • 18k white gold or platinum: brightest fire, premium price point. The default for engagement rings.
  • 14k yellow gold: warm, vintage-leaning. The combination that has grown fastest on social product photography since 2023.
  • Rose gold: the bridal-millennial default. Rose gold oval rings carry a 10 to 15 percent price premium at retail over white gold equivalents, even though the wholesale metal cost is similar.
  • Sterling silver, rhodium plated: entry price point for pendants and stud earrings. Plan to quote a re-plating service at six to twelve months.

Product photography notes

Oval moissanite sells on the image. Shoot the stone on the hand, not on a white background, because the face-up size advantage is only visible in context. Shoot the ring from a three-quarter angle to show the pavilion depth and the fire. Shoot the pendant on a neck form at chain length 40 to 45cm. A stone that looks small on a white sweep reads large on a hand. This is the single most common correction we see from new retailers: the photo undersells the stone, and the customer assumes the stone is the problem.

Bow-tie, revisited

When you buy oval stones for a specific setting, ask for a face-up video in diffuse light. The bow-tie reads differently in a ring than on the bench: a faint bow-tie on the bench can become noticeable on the finger, because the finger behind the stone adds a dark backdrop. We supply face-up videos on request for every oval order, and we recommend asking for them regardless of which supplier you use.

Durability in settings

Oval rings worn daily need the shoulder prongs checked every six months; the elongated shape flexes slightly under hand pressure and prongs work loose faster than on a round. Oval pendants are low-wear and can be set in bezels without issue. Earrings take knocks at the tips, so pair matched ovals with earring backs that hold the basket tight rather than letting the stone swing.

Chain length and earring proportions

Pendants sell on chain length as much as on stone size. A 7x9 oval on a 40cm chain sits at the collarbone, which is the gift-buyer's default; a 45cm chain drops the pendant lower and reads more casual. For earrings, matched oval drops want the long axis vertical, and the pair must come from the same parcel. We match oval earring pairs to within 0.1mm on each dimension; a pair where one stone sits a fraction heavier on the earring wire will hang at different angles and the difference is noticeable once worn.

Many gift buyers add a polishing cloth and a storage pouch at checkout, which is a low-cost upsell that also reduces returns from scuffed stones.
