Pear Cut Moissanite: Buying Matched Pairs for Stud Earrings

An earring maker in Vancouver bought ten loose pear moissanites in 7x5 mm, paired them by millimeter size, and shipped. Three pairs came back within two weeks: one stone in each pair had a heavier bow-tie than its partner, and customers could see it under window light. Repaired pairs cost more than the stones did. The lesson is that pear-cut earring pairs are not two matched singles—they are a single SKU that has to be graded as a pair.

Pear-cut studs are one of the fastest-growing earring SKUs in the moissanite trade. The teardrop shape flatters most face shapes, it reads larger than a round of the same carat, and it pairs cleanly with both casual and bridal wear. But the return rate on poorly matched pear pairs is real. This article explains how to grade a pear pair as a unit, what to write on the PO, and what wholesale pairs cost.

What has to match on a pear pair

For a pear-cut earring pair, five things have to line up. First, millimeter size within ±0.05 mm—a 0.1 mm difference is visible side by side. Second, length-to-width ratio within 0.05 of each other; one stone at 1.45:1 next to one at 1.60:1 looks wrong. Third, color face-up, not just color on the report. Pear shapes show color differently depending on the point direction, and two stones of the same nominal grade can read slightly different in a stud setting. Fourth, bow-tie intensity. The bow-tie is the dark bar across the wing of the pear; a medium bow-tie on both stones is fine, but a faint on one and a strong on the other is a return. Fifth, point symmetry—the tip should line up with the center of the curved shoulder on both stones.

Our own piece on pear bow-tie grading walks through the bow-tie scale in detail, and matched pairs color consistency covers the color-matching procedure for any fancy shape. For the basic pear geometry background, see IGI's educational resources on fancy shapes.

Point direction and setting orientation

Pear studs are set in two orientations: point-up and point-outward (point toward the cheek). Most bridal studs go point-up; most fashion studs go point-outward. When you order a pair, tell the supplier which orientation you plan to set, because the cutter will shade the bow-tie differently depending on which way the point faces. A pair cut for point-up will not look the same flipped point-outward, and customers notice.

The millimeter sizes that sell in pear studs are 6x4 mm (0.6–0.8 ct total pair), 7x5 mm (1.0–1.2 ct pair), and 8x5.5 mm (1.5–1.8 ct pair). The 9x6 mm bracket is a luxury tier that moves slowly. Our marquise ratio guide covers the adjacent long-fancy shape, and heart symmetry pairs covers another shape that is sold almost exclusively as matched pairs.

Wholesale pair pricing vs loose singles

A matched pear pair costs roughly 10–15% more per carat than buying two loose singles from a bin, because the supplier has to pull two stones from inventory and grade them as a unit. That premium is worth paying. The alternative—pairing singles yourself—costs time, rejects, and returns. For the carat-tier math, see our carat pricing tiers and wholesale vs retail margin. When you set the studs, remember the girdle check in girdle thickness notes.

How to photograph matched pear pairs for listings

E-commerce returns on pear studs spike when the listing photo does not show the bow-tie. Photograph the pair side by side under diffuse daylight, with the points oriented the way they will be worn. Show one close-up of the bow-tie on each stone. Customers who see the bow-tie in the listing do not return it; customers who only see a sparkling hero shot do. This applies to any fancy-shape pair listing—see our broader notes in retail positioning.

Can I buy two loose pears and pair them myself?

You can, but expect to reject 30–40% of singles to find a true match. A factory-matched pair costs 10–15% more and usually beats the do-it-yourself cost once labor and rejects are counted.

What L/W ratio is most flattering for pear studs?

1.45:1 to 1.55:1. Below 1.40 reads chubby; above 1.60 reads needle-like.

Which color grade for pear studs?

D-F VVS for white gold or platinum settings. G-H works in yellow gold where the setting warms the stone.

Do pear pairs need certificates?

Matched pairs sold as a pair should carry matching GRA certificates with the same color and clarity grade; see GRA verification for bulk parcels.
